Hoover

Marian Howard Nelems, 85, of Bluff Park, passed peacefully Wednesday, February 5, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. Marian was raised in Pratt City, attended Pratt School and Ensley High School. Marian married the love of her life, Jack Nelems, on June 8, 1952. Marian worked for Jefferson County School System as a substitute teacher in several Over the Mountain elementary schools. Marian was a teacher's aide at Green Valley Elementary in Hoover for several years. The position Marian enjoyed the most was serving as Librarian at Green Valley Elementary where she was able to pass on her love for reading to another generation. Marian was a member of the Bluff Park Elementary PTA, serving as Library Chairman. Marian was part of the group of parents that raised the funds to build a new library at Bluff Park Elementary by hosting the first Shades Mountain Art Show which would evolve to what is today The Bluff Park Art Show. After retiring, Marian's grandchildren became her passion. Marian volunteered in the libraries at Gwin Elementary, Simmons Middle School, and Hoover High School so she could be close to her grandchildren. Later in life, Marian enjoyed traveling to Panama City Beach, Chattanooga, and Disney World. After the loss of her beloved husband, Jack, Marian received comfort and joy from the countless hours of companionship with her great-grandson, Daniel.

Marian is preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents Tom and Elizabeth Howard.

Surviving is her daughter Kathy Nelems Marino, grandson David (Jennifer) Marino, granddaughter Christine (David) Soria and seven great-grandchildren: Brianna, Alexis, Brett, Brendan, Daniel, Melody, Isaac and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12-1PM, Monday, February 10, 2020 at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home Hwy 150 in Hoover, with the chapel service at 1PM officiated by Chuck Ash. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South.
