Margie Benedict

January 7, 1926 — October 2, 2022

Birmingham, Alabama

Margie Benedict entered this world on January 7, 1926 in Salina, Kansas, the oldest child of Raymond and Juanita Preston. She passed away on October 2, 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama where she had moved to be closer to her son’s family. Always a lively and people oriented person she had a “finger in every pie.” Even in her final years when her health was failing, Margie was interested in every person who came into her life and endeared herself to the staff of her nursing home. Most of Margie’s life was lived in Brecksville, Ohio, a town that was beloved to her. She married a Brecksville man, Claude Benedict, who also was devoted to their town. Both were so active in their volunteer activities that each received the honor of being Senior Citizens of the Year. Margie often described herself as a “Second Grade Teacher” and she was very proud of being able to help little ones grow. A favorite memory of one of her teacher friends was Margie teaching a second grade girl how to walk up the aisle as a flower girl. Over the years Margie was involved in many volunteer activities in Brecksville, including assisting with the Crippled Children’s Summer Camp, serving as a host at the Cleveland Clinic office, working with the Brecksville Historical Society as a docent, serving on the Senior Citizen board, interviewing clients for Meals on Wheels, organizing the baked goods distribution for Meals on Wheels, and serving as a greeter at the Human Services Center lunches.

Margie was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Claude Benedict, her sister Mickey Konke, her brother-in-law Frank Pelley, her brother-in-law, Graham Benedict and his wife, Rhea Jane Benedict, her nephew David Benedict, and her great nephew Kyle Mills. She is survived by: her son Dr. Jeff Benedict (Dr. Kate Seifert) and daughter Dr. Claudia Benedict (Jeff Detleffs), grandchildren Max Benedict, Alex Detlefs, Tori Detlefs and Jackson Detlefs, sister Nancy Pelley, brother Ray Preston (Colleen),sister-in-law Janet Roberts and nephews Jim Konke, John Konke, David Preston and nieces Sally (Burt) Mills, Gwen Schmeidel (Ward) and Susan Preston and a number of great nieces and nephews. She also leaves a number of wonderful friends, including Terry and Tom Metyk, Sylvia Fowler, Ted Lux and Jeanette Schroeder.

A private graveside service will be held at a future date.
