Macdonald Fleming

June 8, 1923 — January 6, 2022

MacDonald Brown “Mac” Fleming was born on June 8, 1923 and he passed away peacefully in the early morning of January 6, 2022.  Mac Fleming was a native of Laurens, South Carolina. He was a student at Presbyterian College when the United States entered the Second World War in December, 1941. He left school to join the United States Navy where he served as a radio operator. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Presbyterian College to finish his undergraduate studies. He then earned a Masters Degree in History at Peabody College (now part of Vanderbilt University). He found his life’s work when he accepted a position teaching History at Indian Springs School in Helena, Alabama in 1952. He retired in 1994, but remained involved at the school where he worked in the archives helping to produce a history of the school. Mac Fleming was a long-time member of Oakmont Presbyterian Church in Hoover, Alabama where he served as a Sunday School teacher, a Deacon and an Elder. Mac Fleming was a devoted husband and father. He touched the lives of hundreds of students through his good humor, unfailing patience and love of History. He had a rare ability to bring the subject alive. All those who were lucky enough to know him had their lives enriched by the experience. He will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by his wife Ima Jean Culbertson Fleming.
He is survived by his daughter, Catherine Fleming Edwards (David); his sons, Rhea Culbertson Fleming (Dona) and Robert Franklin Fleming; three grandchildren, Donald Edwards (Ashley), Ben Edwards (Amanda) and Valis Fleming Bowers (Jess); three great-grandchildren, Chloe Edwards, Mylee Edwards and John McNulty “Mac” Bowers.
There will be a private family interment on Monday at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South in Hoover. A Memorial Service to honor Mac Fleming will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Oakmont Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund or to Indian Springs School.
