Dorothy Cooke

Dorothy Aurelia Galloway Cooke, age 100, was born on January 12, 1920 in Abbeville, Alabama and passed away on March 24, 2020 in Leesburg, Alabama. She graduated from West End High School in 1937 and attended Birmingham Southern College where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Dorothy was a stay at home mom until her children were adults at which time she decided to see what the business world was like. She went to work as a secretary and treasurer for Robert Warnock Company, Inc and retired from there after 29 years of service. She enjoyed hobbies of knitting, crocheting, cooking and traveling.

Dorothy was the charter member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles in Hoover, Alabama where she was Chairman of the Altar Guild, member of the founding vestry, a member of Daughters of King, and was not allowed to show up at any church pot luck without her famous banana pudding.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 76 years, Horace Lindsay Cooke, Jr.; parents, Helen and Charles Bishop Galloway; sister, Helen Galloway Mingea; and brother-in-law, Billy Ware.

She is survived by her son, Charles Lindsay Cooke (Pat); daughter, Margueritte Scott Cooke; her grands, Doran Cooke Helton (Stan), Lindsay Cooke Johnson (William), and Carrie Cooke Raab (Kevin); her greats, Carlyn Harris Tyree (Brent), Charlestan Helton Woods (Matt), Emma Clare, Reed and Bishop Johnson, and Cameron and Preston Raab; her great-great, John Thomas Tyree; sister, Martha Ann Ware; and numerous nieces and nephews, family, and friends.

The Celebration of Life Service to honor Dot’s life will be held at a later date at Holy Apostles Episcopal Church.
