Doris Furlong

Doris Bradley Furlong, passed away at Plantation Manor Retirement Home after a brief stay there, having lived the previous year with her son, Dennis and his wife, Lisa, and their family in Wetumpka, Alabama.  Prior to this she was a long time resident of Hoover, Alabama.  She was married to Earl Furlong for 41 years.

Doris was the daughter of the late Andrew L. Bradley and Corene Elizabeth Tyus Bradley.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Earl Furlong, and son, Robert E. Furlong.  She is survived by sons Edwin (Debra) Furlong, Dennis (Lisa) Furlong and Gary Furlong (David Costa), sister and good friend, Annabelle Bradley.  She has eight grandchildren:  Shea (Mark) Williams, Daniel (Jill) Furlong, Gracie (Justin) Hill, Leslie (Matt) Tanner, Lauren (Hunter) Strickler, Madelyn, Sydney, and Emma Furlong.  She was also blessed with twelve great grandchildren:  Savannah, Graham and Heidi Williams, Aiden, Norah and Cailey Tanner, Haleigh and Brooke Strickler, Davis and Lucy Hill, Matthew and Michael Furlong.  There are also many nieces and nephews.  Doris was fortunate to have been cared for by Catherine Smoke, who was not only a compassionate and tireless caregiver but also a great friend.

Doris was a member of Riverchase United Methodist Church and was a member of the Fairfield High School Alumni Association - Class of 1947.

Services will be held Thursday, December 29 at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hoover.  Visitation will be at 1 PM and funeral service at 2 PM with her burial immediately following at Elmwood Cemetery.

The great loves of her life were her family, traveling and reading.  Few things delighted her more than to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; countless photos of them all adorned her home and she was always thrilled to talk about them with anyone who would listen.  She also loved to travel, particularly to England and Italy, and to visit a son in California.  She continued to travel, unaccompanied, until she was 89 years old at which point she announced she’d done enough traveling and that was that.  She was proud of the fact that she was able to continue to live alone up until she was 92, with the help of her son Edwin and his wife, Debra.

Her family was blessed with a mother who was a natural cook and homemaker.  Many of her recipes are still used by family members to this day.  Before retiring, her last job was Administrative Assistant in mortgage banking, where she took great pride in her work and enjoyed the friendship of many co-workers.

She will be greatly missed.
