Brian Feldman

September 6, 1934 — June 1, 2022

Birmingham, Alabama

Brian Feldman, age 87, died peacefully at his home surrounded by family on June 1, 2022.

Brian was born in Brooklyn, New York, the second son of Yetta and Sam Feldman.  He graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School in 1952. After serving in both the Army and then the Air Force, he graduated from the University of Miami in 1961.  Later in life he went on to obtain a MBA from Samford University in 1981.

After growing up in Brooklyn, serving in the military and living in Miami, Brian settled in Homewood, Alabama in the mid 1960s.  He married the love of his life, Julia Garate Burgos in 1958 and raised four children.  He worked for the Social Security Administration in Birmingham for more than 25 years before retiring and he then worked as an adjunct professor both at Birmingham-Southern College and at Jefferson State Junior College for another two decades teaching accounting until he was in his early 80s.

Brian was an avid family man – devoted to his wife and children; and then to his grandchildren – all eight of them. He enjoyed sports, particularly baseball and his beloved Dodgers. When he married, he left the Jewish faith and became Catholic.  He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church for almost 50 years.  He was always the teacher – teaching his children 5 decades ago with wall maps and a globe and teaching his grandchildren vowels sounds using this sentence – “Lady, I owe you some ….” - a, e, i, o, u. He was not loud and he did not brag – rather, he was calm and understated – and, generous. He was bright – always able to see and empathize with different points of view. He cared about his fellow man – in short, he was a good and kind man.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Julia, his children, Danny (Mur) Feldman, Richard Feldman and Vicky Menke Feldman as well as his daughter in law, Jeannie Feldman and his grandchildren, Dani (Diana) Feldman, Christian (Sydney Willmann) Feldman, Brian Feldman, Hallie Feldman, Rebecca (Blake) Silver, Veronica Feldman, Lainey Feldman and Julianna Menke.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Yetta Feldman and his brother, Irwin Feldman (October 2, 2007). His son Glenn Feldman preceded him in death (October 19, 2015) as did his daughter in law, Gloria Feldman (June 10, 2011).
