Tula Virginia
Gray
Aug 13, 1936 — Sep 15, 2026
Tula Virginia (Vick) Gray, beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 15, 2026, at the age of 90. She was born on August 13, 1936, in Vincent, Alabama, and was the sixth of eight children born to the late James and Flossie Vick.
Virginia’s early years built her foundation of faith, hard work ethic, and love for music. Raised in church, she was twelve years old when she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior. Shortly after, was baptized at Baptist Creek Church. Music was a cherished part of her childhood. Her four brothers played instruments while the four sisters sang in harmony. Throughout her life, she embodied love, generosity, faith, and diligence, qualities that would become the hallmark of the legacy she leaves behind.
On September 1, 1955, Virginia met the love of her life, late Jack Emory Gray. Just fourteen days later, on September 14, 1955, they exchanged vows at her family home in Vincent, which began an amazing partnership that spanned over seven decades. In September of 1960, their son, Jeff Gray, was born. Then, in 1972, they fulfilled a lifelong dream when they built their family home in Shannon, AL, where the doors were always open, laughter was abundant, and generations of family has gathered to share in the love that Virginia and Jack so faithfully nurtured.
As a member of the Nazarene Church since 1967, they faithfully worshipped and served the Lord for many years. In 2019, they moved their membership to Birmingham First Church, needing to be closer to home. Virginia retired in 2001 from Birmingham Rail & Locomotive as the Office Manager, where she taught others professional development skills. She lived her life as a testament to God’s grace, finding joy in serving others, sharing her wisdom, and loving her family with all her heart.
Survived by her son, Jeff Gray (Jeannie); grandchildren, Ashley Barnes, Daniel Gray (Chantel), and Tyler Bowman; great-grandchildren, Gracie Mixon (Zack), Baylee Gray, Charlie Gray, and Alexander Gray; great-great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Josiah Mixon. Surviving sibling is Sarah “Kaye” Broome (Bill).
She was preceded in death by parents, James and Flossy Vick. Siblings include James M. Vick (Jackie); Joe Nathan Vick (Peggy); Lauren “Johnnie” Vick (Dot); Jackie Vick (Sandra); Onzell Cain (Horace); and Gayle Partridge (Randal).
