Ted Oelschlager of Helena, Alabama passed away Saturday, August 6, 2022 at his home, at the age of 89. He was born January 15, 1933 in Glendale, West Virginia to Theodore and Wilhelmina Oelschlager. Ted attended Union High school where he was an avid athlete and upon graduation joined the United States Air Force. He served for 24 years, most notably during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, retiring in ‘74 at the rank of Master Sergeant.
He then moved his family to Helena, Alabama to work at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, where he remained until his retirement in 1992.
He was a devoted member of Helena United Methodist Church for 48 years and dedicated many years to coaching youth softball in the city of Helena. Ted was an avid baseball historian and fan who loved the Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates. His grandchildren and great grandchildren brought him great joy and pride.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Sara L. Oelschlager, daughter, Deborah L. Oelschlager, and son, Theodore C. Oelschlager. He is survived by his youngest daughter, Commander Kimberly A, Oelschlager, USN, of Fallon, Nevada. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, Operation Homefront, or the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of Alabama at Birmingham . Graveside service with military honors will be Saturday, August 13 at 1100 at Currie-Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Hoover.
