Susan Hendon, age 67, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 14, 2026, surrounded by friends who loved her dearly.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026, at Currie-Jefferson Memorial Gardens on John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover, Alabama.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Mary Hendon; her aunt and uncle, J.C. and Maxine Kemp; her uncle, Charles Alexander; her aunt and uncle, Joe and Juanita Poore; and her cousin, Sandra Poore Bailey.
She is survived by her brother, David Hendon (Lynda); her aunt, Eloise Alexander; her cousins, Linda Hester (Clay), Wanda Kemp, and Becky Zierer (Larry); and an extended family of cherished friends.
Susan dedicated 39 years of her life to teaching in the Birmingham City School System. Teaching was more than a career for Susan. It was a calling and a way for her to make a lasting difference in the lives of others. Throughout her years in the classroom, she shared her love of learning with thousands of students, leaving behind countless memories and an impact that will continue through the lives of those she taught. She retired in 2018.
In retirement, Susan cherished the simple joys of life, especially spending time with her friends and the people she loved. She was a kind and caring soul with a generous heart, always willing to give her time and herself to those who needed her. She devoted many years to caring for her parents and her aunt, reflecting the deep love and compassion she carried for her family.
Susan was a member of Forestdale Church of the Nazarene. She was also a devoted Auburn football fan and never missed an opportunity to cheer for the Tigers.
Susan's life was defined not only by the years she spent teaching, but by the lives she touched along the way. She gave generously of her time, her love, and her heart. Though she will be deeply missed, the memories she created and the love she gave will remain with her family, friends, former students, and all those fortunate enough to have known her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Susan.
