Sue Rachels Rainer passed away June 7, 2025, at the age of 93. She was a resident of Vestavia Hills, Alabama for the last 51 years.
Born in Bartow, Georgia to Jasper and Susie Rachels. She grew up with siblings: Franklin, Polly, W J, Neet, J M, Mary Jo, and Martha. She always remained close with her siblings.
Sue attended Kerr Business School in Augusta, Georgia. While working as a secretary at Fort Gordon, Georgia, she met the love of her life when the handsome new Captain, Hewlett Rainer, US Army reported for duty. Sue and Hewlett were married in 1952 and she began her life as an officer's wife.
Being a military wife, Sue was able to see a lot of the world. She was a devoted spouse who supported her husband's military service and managed the challenges of military life, such as frequent moves and separations. She was well known for her hosting skills- everyone always looked forward to her exceptional parties. Sue was involved in the officer's wives club where she engaged in philanthropic and social activities.
Sue and Hewlett had three children:
Paula (deceased at 3 years old), Pam, and Dean.
Sue was an avid golfer. She enjoyed participating in tournaments and going on golf trips with her friends. She was very artistic had the wonderful ability to create, decorate, and entertain.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hewlett, and her child, Paula. She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Rainer Davis, son Dean Gregory Rainer, and grandson Sean Randolph Rainer. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Jo McNeely, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved so much.
A private family service will be held June 11, 2025, in York, Alabama
