Ruth Mitchell

MITCHELL, RUTH P., age 89, passed away on April 19, 2010 in Birmingham, AL after a brief illness. Mrs. Mitchell graduated from Forrest High School in Chapel Hill, Tennessee and from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. She taught in the Madison County Alabama School system for 32 years. Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her son, Dr. Bob Mitchell and her daughter-in-law, Paula Hultquist Mitchell, of Hoover, Alabama; her grandson, Bob Mitchell, her grand-daughter-in-law, Jennifer Glaze Mitchell, and great-grandchildren Sara Chandler and Hughes Mitchell, all of Mountain Brook, Alabama. Mrs. Mitchell also is survived by her sister-in-law, Nancy Maxwell Powell and her niece, Nanette Powell Todd, of Chapel Hill, Tennessee. Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon C. Mitchell (of Huntsville, Alabama), her parents, Aurora R. and Milton T. Powell of Chapel Hill, and by her siblings, James M. Powell of Frederick, Maryland, Mary P. Cheek of Lewisburg, Tennessee, and Clarence A. Powell of Chapel Hill, Tennessee. Mrs. Mitchell lived in Madison County and Huntsville, Alabama from 1941-2005 and in Hoover, Alabama from 2005 until her death. She and her husband were members of Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntsville. A visitation will be held at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home located at 2701 John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover at 12:00 PM on Wednesday April 21. Funeral services will begin immediately thereafter at 1:00 PM. Following the service, Mrs. Mitchell will be intered with her husband at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South. Mrs. Mitchell’s pallbearers will be Andrew Todd, Brian Todd, Hunter Todd, Adam Todd and Ira Todd (all of Chapel Hill), and Mr. Raymond Morris (of Huntsville). The family is very appreciative of the recent care provided to Mrs. Mitchell by the staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham and by her physician, Dr. James M. Gewin. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Camp Smile-A-Mile, a non-profit organization providing free summer camp to children with cancer.
