Pelham, AL

Ronald Stephens Powell, age 87, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2021. He was the youngest child of Thomas and Olive Powell, of Irondale, AL. He is predeceased by 7 sisters and 6 brothers. Following his graduation from Shades Valley High School, he enlisted in the Army and served two years; 18 months in Berlin, Germany. He was the first in his family to attend and graduate college. He graduated from Howard College, now Samford University, in 1961. In 1959, he met the love of his life, his future wife Shirley Shadix. They were married in 1960. Following his graduation from Howard, he began his career in Birmingham where their sons, Steve and Scott, were born. He relocated several times and came back to Birmingham in 1975. He was always known as a man of his word and for his exceptional work ethic, which he instilled in his sons. He was proud that this quality has passed down through his sons to his grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. He was a 21-year cancer survivor, overcame many other health issues, and lead an active life. He was an active member of Hunter Street Baptist Church and Bobby Boles Sunday School class. He loved his family, loved making cinnamon raisin biscuits for his grandchildren, baking pound cakes for his friends and family, Auburn football, playing golf (where he earned the nickname “Rocket”), working in the yard which resulted in a yard enjoyed and admired by many. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Shirley; sons: Steve and wife Glenda, Scott and wife Cynthia. Grandchildren Elizabeth, Eric and wife Beth, Patrick and wife Brittney, Zachary and wife Michelle. Great-grandchildren Noah, Sam, Maddux, Asher, and Eden.
