Roderic “Rod” Alonzo Jones, age 81, of Hoover, Alabama went to be with the Lord on June 9, 2023. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was a blessing to all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

Rod grew up in south Alabama. He graduated from Vigor High School in 1959, where he was an outstanding student and athlete. He had a particular love of baseball. After high school he went to Auburn University and graduated in 1964 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. After graduation, he married Sarah McIlwain and they had two daughters, Wendy and Pamela. He spent most of his career at Birmingham Southern Railroad from which he retired. After retirement, he continued working as a consultant for the Alabama Department of Transportation.

Rod was a passionate outdoorsman and enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing. He also, loved the Lord and his church, Fairfield Highlands Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was always tasked with saying grace at family occasions and it was always impactful to those present. He was a huge fan of his Auburn Tigers and enjoyed watching college football. He also enjoyed watching Nascar and old western movies. Rod had a kind, loving spirit. He had a great love for his family and friends, as did they for him. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren (Riley, Brent, and Tyler), his step grandchildren (Lawson and Kyla) and his great grandchildren (Skylar Mae and Blakely Rose). He used to climb trees, act like a bear, and other fun things to make them smile and laugh.

Rod was proceeded in death by his father Perry Percy Jones, his mother Rose Jones Farris, and his brother Kenneth Jones. He is survived by his brother Dewayne Jones, his two daughters Wendy Culberson (Michael) and Pamela Jones Shaw (Tim), his grandchildren Riley Lynch, Brent Culberson, Tyler Lynch, Lawson Shaw, and Kyla Shaw and his great grandchildren Skylar Mae Tissier and Blakely Rose Miller.

Visitation and funeral will be held, Thursday, June 15, at Jefferson Currie Funeral Home on highway 150 in Hoover. Visitation will begin at 1:00 followed by a service at 2:00.
