Richard "Richie" McCoy Phillips, 65, of Hoover, Alabama, passed away peacefully on April 1,
2024 surrounded by family and friends. Richie was born on November 16, 1958, to William P. Phillips and Marion M. Phillips in Birmingham, Alabama.
After graduating from Vestavia Hills High School in 1977, he went on to study Organizational Communication and Marketing at the University of South Alabama where he also played for the USA Golf Team.
After graduation, he joined the family business at Phillips Brokerage Company, where he
worked his way up from the ground floor to Account Executive/Director of Perishables. He then went on to have over 20 years of success in the medical field working for Surgical Systems, Medtronic and Capital Surgical Solutions.
In 1981, Richie met Gloria while at South Alabama and it was truly love at first sight. They
married on June 30,1984 and moved to Clearwater, FL before settling in Birmingham a few years later. They were blessed with two sons, Cade and Blake, and a marriage of almost 40 years.
Richie's family meant the world to him, something he often talked about. He was a force of
nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. He was at every game, event or ceremony his boys were involved in, always supporting them in every aspect of life. He loved when the whole Phillips crew would vacation together. Fond memories were made at Callaway Gardens, North Carolina and the beautiful Gulf
Coast. Family vacations always involved golf outings, eventful bike rides, wrestling with his
nephews, family skit nights, and even the occasional impromptu performance by the Rhino
Brothers. Richie was also a passionate golfer, enjoying time on the course or at Smith Lake
with his family.
Not only was Richie a loving husband and devoted father, but he was also a loyal friend. He was very engaging and made friends quickly and genuinely. He could light up a room with his signature laugh and smile, always offering a welcoming handshake, warm hug, fun conversation or a LENGTHLY phone call just to check in.
Richie is predeceased by his parents Bill and Marion Phillips and his Brother-in-law Jeb
Cloyd. He is survived by his wife, Gloria, his sons Blake and Cade, Cade's wife
Whitney and beautiful granddaughter Ada. He is also survived by his sister Cindy Cloyd, brother Bill Phillips, his wife Becky, and many nieces and nephews.
The Funeral will be held at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home on Monday April 8, 2024. Visitation will be 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. with the service to follow at 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family asks donations to be made to The Foundry Ministries or First Tee Birmingham. Richie believed in teaching young people the game of golf to learn life skills like
"Confidence, Courtesy, Honesty, Integrity, Judgment, Perseverance, Respect, Responsibility
and Sportsmanship".
