R. Swindle

February 19, 1925 — July 27, 2005


of Birmingham, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at the age of 80. He grew up in Walker County. Mr. Swindle was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Cahaba Heights. As a S/SGT in the 8th Air Force , Mr. Swindle served his country as a tail gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress, completing 36 missions over Germany during WWII, and winning the Air Medal with five Bronze Oak-Leaf Clusters. He was employed by State Farm Insurance for more than 30 years. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary C. Swindle; two sons, Mike Swindle (Stephanie) of Augusta, GA and Ronnie Swindle (Penny) of Panama City Beach, FL; a daughter, Sandy Childers (Alan) of Birmingham; six grandchildren, Alison, Emily, Brent and Weston Swindle, Shannon Newell (Randy) and Jeremy Childers; a great grandson, Caleb Newell; a brother, Herbert Swindle (Alice) of Birmingham; two sisters, Betty Jo McMillian (Bobby) of Childersburg and Jane Brom of Jasper; and his beloved dog, Dixie. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 28, 2005, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy. 150, Hoover. Graveside service will be on Friday, July 29, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South, in Hoover, with Barry Bruce officiating. Donations may be made to Philadelphia Baptist Church in Cahaba Heights or to the Jefferson County Humane Society. Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home directing.
