Phia S. Kontoes Griggs, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on June 15, 2026, at her home surrounded by family.

Phia was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who meant so much to her family and friends. She loved to laugh and could always find something to laugh about. She loved deeply and cared deeply for the people in her life.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Toula S. Kontoes.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, John Griggs; her daughter, Mary Litchfield, and son-in-law, Haynes Litchfield; her son, Robert Griggs, and soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Caitlin Hicks; her grandchildren, Collins and Jackson Litchfield; her father, Spyros Kontoes; her brother, Mike Kontoes, and sister-in-law, Anna Kontoes; her brother, Pete Kontoes, and sister-in-law, DeeDee Kontoes; along with many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers include Robert Griggs, Haynes Litchfield, Ben Olree, Hayden Ward, Spyros "Rocky" Kontoes, Dr. Ben Gomez, Peter Jones, Dr. Jim Bass, Matt Kotsianas, Mike Kontoes, Pete Kontoes, George "Yogi" Kamburis, Marty Kamburis, Mark Kamburis, and Chris Cirillo.

Visitation will be held on June 19 at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Birmingham, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 AM. A graveside service will then be held at Currie-Jefferson Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
