Patricia Scholl McVea, 85, of Hoover, Alabama went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 9. She is best known by her nickname “Honey” given to her by her grandchildren. Pat was born in Birmingham, Alabama to Herbert Wade Hydinger and Mary Lois Thompson on October 4, 1934. She graduated from Woodlawn High School before attending The University of Alabama, and majoring in Home Economics. Pat married Richard G. Scholl and had 3 wonderful children Rick, Sheri, and Dawn. Pat worked at Southern National Gas for many years until she moved with her family to Fort Knox, KY, and Columbus, OH, before returning to the great city of Birmingham for good. Pat enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play sports and participate in many activities. She was a member of Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church. Her greatest gift is her “giving” spirit and her infectious smile. She was accepting of all people, loving them unconditionally. She gave her heart to many friendships, her time to her family, her advice when asked, and her beautiful smile to everyone. Honey celebrated every possible occasion at her home with family, lots of food and lots of storytelling, and of course pictures! She made the most out of every day. To those who received her sweet smile in passing also received a special gift. Pat spent most of the last 22 years married to Carroll Burt McVea who taught her how to swim, hunt, and love (sort of) the outdoors. They enjoyed dancing and were the hit of any social gathering on the dance floor.
Pat is survived by her children Rick Scholl, Sheri Salmon (Mark), and Dawn Hoffman (Jerry), Carroll Burt McVea, and Mark McVea, her grandchildren, Clay Jones (Courtney), Lauren Jones, Samantha Salmon, and Hunter Salmon, her great grandchildren James and Pierce Jones, a sister, Jane Gardner (Sid), and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Lucile and Herbert Hydinger, sister, Ann Busby (Don), and husband Carroll Burt McVea.
Honey’s life will be celebrated at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church on a later date when we all can gather and truly give thanks to her life. Memorials in Pat’s honor to be given to Birmingham-Southern College, 900 Arkadelphia Road, Birmingham, AL 35254 or Vestavia Hills UMC, 2061 Kentucky Avenue, Vestavia, AL 35216
