age 83, a native of Laurel, MS and a resident of Birmingham for 33 years died at his home on Thursday, January 26, 2006. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University. Mr. Nelson was a World War II Air Force Veteran serving in the 8th Air Force based in England and was awarded the Air Medal, three Oakleaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was retired from Sears Roebuck and Co. after 34 years, during which time he was Store Manager in Mobile, East Lake in Birmingham and finally in Vestavia Hills in Birmingham. He was a member of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Vestavia-Hoover Kiwanis Club, past president of the Vestavia Hills Merchant's Association, a member of The Club and a member of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Kelly Lowe; four daughters, Marcia Clark(Rick) of Junction, TX, Beth Wiygul, (Bill), Nancy Gotham (Jim), and Vicki Frey (Jerry) all of Birmingham; 5 grandchildren, Ryan Byrd, Jeremy Byrd, Kelly Frey, Allison Frey, and John Gotham; one sister, Vema L. Funderburk of Laurel, MS. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 28th, 2006 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Highway 150, Hoover. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 p.m., with Dr. Otis Brooks and Dr. Gary Furr officiating. The members of the Squires Sunday School class will serve as honorary allbearers. The interment will be private. The family extends special thanks to the staff of Amedisys Hospice and Home Health Care. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Amedisys Hospice and Home Health Care or the Vestavia Hills Baptist Church Building Fund. Currie-Jefferson Funeral directing.
