Mr. Dana Tunmire

Dana “Dan” Tunmire March 15, 1930 – September 24, 2022 Dana “Dan” Tunmire, died on September 24, 2022 at the age of 92. Dan was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Turnmire; his mother, Margaret Turnmire; his sister, Freeda Davidson; and his brother, Bruce Turnmire. Dan is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean Coleman Tunmire; son, Danny Tunmire (Amy); daughters: Mary Trotman (Jeff) and Carol Saville (James); two granddaughters, Mary Catherine Saville and Kadee Lee Tunmire; and five grandsons, Charles Lewis Trotman, William Gladstone Trotman, Matthew James Saville, David Alexander Trotman, and Max Vaughn Tunmire.

Dan was born in Thorn Hill, Tennessee on March 15, 1930. He earned degrees from The University of Tennessee and The University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Lieutenant Colonel Tunmire retired from the U.S. Army in 1975. He served in Georgia, South Korea, Italy, Germany, Washington, D.C.; attended the Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, KS; commanded a battalion at Ft. Polk, LA; taught ROTC at the University of Tennessee, Martin Tennessee. He served with MACV Group and worked with native Montagnards in Vietnam. While serving a tour of duty in Vietnam he received numerous commendations, including the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Vietnam Service Medal.

After retiring from the Army, he was a City Administrator in both Lanette, AL and Hueytown, AL. He worked for Jefferson County Finance Department until he retired in 2000.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Birmingham, AL
