Michael Thorsen

Michael Terry Thorsen, affectionately known to most as Coach, passed away on June 25, 2024, leaving behind a lasting legacy. Mike was born on September 30, 1947, in Pensacola, Florida. After graduating from Pensacola Catholic High School in 1965 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Mike served during the Vietnam War from 1966-1968. When he returned home he graduated from the University of West Florida and began his football coaching career.

In 1989 Mike married Kathy and moved to Birmingham, AL. Over the past 35 years, he coached at Homewood, Berry, and Hoover, and spent the last 25 years at Mountain Brook High School. In total he coached high school football for 51 years, impacting countless young men's lives.

Mike's greatest joys in life were his children and grandchildren. Though most called him Coach, he was most proud to be called Papa. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, going to the gun range, and spending time with his family at Pensacola Beach and Lake Martin.

Mike is survived by his wife, Kathy Thorsen; son, Michael Thorsen (Maureen); daughter, Page Rubin (Eric); grandchildren, Makenna Thorsen, Miller Thorsen, Samuel Rubin, and Nolan Rubin; his sister-in-law, Marion Thorsen; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mike is preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth and Arthur S. Thorsen and his brother Arthus S. Thorsen Jr.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Coach Mike Thorsen will be held at Spartan Arena at Mountain Brook High School on Monday, July 1st at 4:00 pm. The family will receive visitors from 2:00-4:00 pm before the memorial.

A private family graveside service will be held on Tuesday at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.
