Mary Baker

April 28, 1944 — August 3, 2025

Mary K Baker, beloved wife, mother and educator joined friends and family in Heaven on August 3, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength, wit and devotion to her family and community. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Clifton Edward "Buddy" Alexander III and sister Elizabeth Alexander and is survived by her loving husband of 58 years Don Baker, daughter Meredith (Kyle) Hanson, sister Jane Alexander Gardner, sister-in-law Sue Alexander, nephew Jonas Alexander (Melonie), niece Leigh Anne Alexander (Jason) Seahorn and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was born on April 28, 1944 to Hallie and Clifton Edward Alexander II. She grew up in Chickasaw, Alabama with a determined spirit and competitive edge that served her well throughout life. She graduated from Vigor High School, where she was a proud member of the track team, before attending Auburn University. It was there that she earned her degree in Education and met the love of her life, Don Baker. They were married on June 9, 1967, beginning a partnership built on love, teamwork and mutual respect.

Mary K was immersed in her teaching career in Marietta, Georgia when she and Don welcomed their daughter Meredith on July 31, 1971. The family later moved to Dalton, Georgia where Mary K devoted herself to raising Meredith, keeping Don organized and becoming an active member of the community. She enjoyed rooting for her Auburn Tigers and Atlanta Braves, playing in her tennis league and working as a long-term substitute teacher in local elementary schools where she impacted the lives of countless students.

Behind her strong, no-nonsense demeanor was a deeply kind and generous heart. She took great pride in her family and approached life with a unique blend of humor, discipline and warmth. Loved by many and respected by all who knew her, she will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Special thanks and recognition is given to Lisa, Tasha and Michelle of Nichols' Home Care Providers, who treated Mary K like one of their own, and to Southeast Hospice for their care, guidance and professionalism during this difficult time.
