It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Martha Spengler who died suddenly on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at her home in Hoover, Alabama.
Born in 1943 in Kinsey, Alabama to Mandi Mae (McCord) and Rossie William Sketo, Martha moved to the Birmingham area in 1984. She worked as an Interior Designer at Birmingham Wholesale Furniture for over 30 years and, during that time, developed many long-term business relationships and friendships with her clients.
Martha had an eye for beauty and quality, which was reflected in all aspects of her life. A passionate gardener, she had numerous antique rose bushes and unique varieties of lilies and irises. She enjoyed sharing bouquets and bulbs with family, friends, and co-workers. A lifelong learner, Martha spent countless hours researching the origin of anything that caught her interest from “why it’s called a gem clip” to the history of a building or furniture style. She and her son, Terry, would occasionally watch an interesting episode on the History channel while discussing it on the phone.
Martha had many friends and looked forward to her weekly dinner with a small group of women from her church, Our Lady of Sorrows in Homewood, where she was a member for 38 years. Her life was filled with laughter, and she enjoyed telling stories and sharing photos of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and grand dogs. She had an admirable ability to persevere and remain positive throughout life’s trials. Those close to her often heard her say, “Everything happens for a reason. God has a plan and it’s in His time.”
She is survived by her children, Terry Ellenburg (Ronna) of Wicksburg, Alabama; Martee Spengler Duffey (Greg), Pinson, Alabama; and Justin Spengler (Samantha) of Birmingham. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Emma Holt, Pinson, Alabama; Brad Enfinger (Sarina) Wicksburg, Alabama; Casey Knighton (Chase), Taylor, Alabama; seven great grandchildren; and brothers, John Mack Sketo, Esto, Florida and Shelby “Buck” Sketo, Wicksburg, Alabama.
Martha was predeceased by brothers, William Edward Sketo and Bob Sketo; sisters, Joyce (Sketo) Yeomans and Betty Ruth (Sketo) Deal; and one grandson, Michael Dale Enfinger.
