Lee Hitchcock was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on December 4, 1941. On July 3, 2025, at 83 years old, he passed peacefully in Birmingham and went to be with the Lord.
Lee was born to Ray and Amelia Hitchcock of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, and his siblings Gary, Ray Jr., and Jane are still living. After graduating from Shades Valley High School, he attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1963. While attending university, Lee met his lovely wife-to-be, Barbara Lounette Oliver, and they were married in December of 1965.
Lee served proudly as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1968. He then worked for Ford Motor Company before beginning his career with the City of Birmingham Police Department in 1973 as the Administrative Services Manager. He proudly represented the Department as the Accreditation Manager for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). As an accreditation assessor, he traveled throughout the United States and Canada for CALEA, promoting the highest standards in policing. Lee was known for building relationships based on respect and trust and had a positive influence on the lives of others during his service with the City. He retired from the City of Birmingham in 2004 after a distinguished 30-year career.
Lee and Barbara raised three children who all live locally. His eldest son, Kevin, lives in Birmingham with his wife Laurel; middle daughter, Lisa, lives in Pelham; and youngest son, Jason, lives in Hoover with his wife Fonda and their two sons, Joshua (10) and James (6). Lee loved his kids and grandkids and was a kind, giving, and patient father and grandfather. He especially loved making holidays special for his family and was known for his giblet gravy and chocolate fudge.
Lee always had a sense of adventure, which he shared with his children. He enjoyed walking through the city during his lunch breaks, traveling, and taking family vacations. He liked to go bird watching with his grandsons, who call him their “Papa.” He took pride in having the prettiest lawn in the neighborhood. Lee practiced calligraphy and was very proud of his pen collection. He always looked forward to spending football Saturdays with his family and a cheerful, “Roll Tide!” He loved classic cars and always knew the make, model, and year of a car simply by looking at its door handle. He especially loved fried peach pies and was always ready for a fresh cup of coffee, day or night.
Lee was a devout follower of Christ, and his faith deepened throughout his life. He was a member of and attended Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. He never missed the Christmas Candlelight Service and found great joy and comfort in the community of Christ.
The family truly appreciates all those who knew and supported Lee throughout his life. A special thanks goes to the hardworking and dedicated medical staff of UAB Medicine who extended immeasurable care to Lee. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Dawson Memorial’s Building Fund. http://dawsonchurch.org/giving
