Joseph Grant Wheeler Jr.

Joseph Grant Wheeler, Jr., born November 16, 1947, in Birmingham, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2026, at the age of 78, surrounded by family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud Poppa, and cherished friend to many.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Frances Lovelady Wheeler; his children, Joseph (Melinda) Wheeler, Amanda (Mitchell) Marcum, and Emily (Chris) Brown; his treasured grandchildren, Addisyn Wheeler, Ryan and Henry Marcum, and David Brown. Brothers and sisters Pam (Randy) Johnson, Debbie (Doug) Coppock, Scott (Robin) Wheeler and Brian (Nicole) Wheeler; along with many extended family members and dear friends.

A longtime resident of Hoover, Joe was the son of Joseph Grant Wheeler, Sr. and Eva Cook Wheeler. He spent nearly 40 years working for Alagasco, retiring in 2007 as Vice President of Operations. Joe also proudly served his country in the United States Navy on USS Camden during the Vietnam War.

Joe will be remembered for his devotion to family, strong work ethic, kindness, wisdom, and sharp wit that could bring laughter to any room. Of all his titles, "Poppa" was the one he wore most proudly.

The family will receive friends on Monday, May 4, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home Memorial Gardens in Hoover. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by a graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Joe's memory to the American Heart Association, American Lung Association, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or a charity of one's choice.
