John Kimbrell

Charles "RAB" Kimbrell, 95, passed away at his home on May 28th, surrounded by his loving family. He attended Berry High School in Fayette Co., AL. Charles was drafted out of high school into the U.S. Army. He served his country in the Philippines during WWII with the 1140th Combat Engineers.

After returning home from the war he married Gwen Studdard. They were married 74 years and raised 3 sons; Johnny, Mike and Tim. Charles retired from U.S. Steel after 38 years of service. He continued working into his late 80's installing appliances.

Charles loved to work, cook, fish, and had a passion for Alabama football, still attending games (home & away) until his 90th birthday.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He always put family first. He will be greatly missed.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Carrie Ellis; brothers, Troy and Joe Kimbrell; and son, Mike Kimbrell. He is survived by his loving wife, Gwen; two sons, Johnny (Sandra) and Tim; daughter-in-law, Pam Kimbrell; brother, Lynn Kimbrell; grandchildren, Ashley Hogland (James), Brad Kimbrell (Christie), Lana Cole (Kevin), Leia Kimbrell, Linsey Kimbrell, Lauren Kimbrell and Taylor Kimbrell (Nicole); great grandchildren, Cross Hogland, Merideth Hogland, Sean Kimbrell, Brooklyn Kimbrell and Camden Kimbrell.

Charles was laid to rest on June 2, 2020, at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL. Contributions may be made in Charles memory to: UAB Gift Records Office (Cancer), 1720 2nd Ave. S., Birmingham, AL 35294.
