Other than the hard work he put forth in his degree during his college career, he was a part of the Chi Phi fraternity where he met many lifelong friends and made lifelong memories. He held many roles in the fraternity house, including Alpha (president) during his senior year. Despite his elective chapter offices, unquestionably, his favorite position was being the house’s sports director. John played high school sports and relished. Playing, coaching, and being the captain of the Chi Phi intramural teams, especially the football team was part of his favorite responsibilities within the Chi Phi brotherhood. He also served in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War for which he received an honorable discharge for his service. Following college, he assumed many professions of work. He was great salesman and entrepreneur. His business life entailed many fields of work ranging from contracting Jefferson Home and Marts Fitzgerald to selling insurance and income rental properties. Along with his hard work ethic, he had many hobbies. The biggest of these hobbies being football, especially Alabama football. As an Alabama alumnus, he of course loved Saturday football and celebrated every Bama win. He loved Alabama football almost more than life itself. His biggest love was his family and the traditions they shared. He wanted nothing more than to make sure his family was taken care of. He was preceded in death by his mother Hazel Gray Patton, his father Emmett Patton, and his sister Barbara Patton. He survived through the love of his wife Joan R. Patton, his daughters Dee Ann Powers (Steve Powers) and Melinda King (Brian King), two granddaughters Leslie Davis (Terry Davis) and Lindsey King, and many other loved ones of the Patton family.
