Jewel Lavada Spradlin Grimes of Bessemer, AL, passed into heaven’s gates on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at the age of 85. Jewel was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, Christian leader and servant. She graduated from McAdory High School and attended and served at Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church for near 75 years. Jewel loved her Lord Jesus Christ, her entire family and friends. She was born in St Clair County and moved to Bessemer around age 11 and lived in the Hopewell community for the remainder of her life. She was married to her high school sweetheart Ken Grimes Sr. for over 60 years raising a family and working in many Bessemer businesses during her entire life.
She is survived by her daughter Denice Riley, son Ken Grimes Jr.,(Kelly); grandchildren John A. Latham (Christina), Wesley Latham, Kendra Armstrong (Jason), Abby Grimes, Caroline Grimes; great granddaughter Adrianna Armstrong, and great grandson Colton Armstrong; and her brother Louis Spradlin along with many nephews and nieces and other relatives.
Jewel Grimes is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth; mother Esther Myrick, father Sebe Spradlin and step fathers Leonard Spradlin and Arthur Myrick; sisters Lillian Hyche, Clara Hegwood.
The family will have visitation of friends and guests on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 from 1–2 pm with funeral services at 2 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover, Alabama located on Highway 150 with the Rev Scott Edwards of Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church officiating. Graveside service will follow depending on weather at Jefferson Memorial Gardens South.
