Janice
McKinney
Jun 10, 1946 — Sep 6, 2026
Janice East McKinney, cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 80. Born on June 10, 1946, in Jacksonville, Florida, Janice was the beloved daughter of the late Knox and Jane East. She lived a life defined by love, generosity, faith, and an extraordinary ability to make others feel cared for and valued.
In Charlotte, North Carolina, Janice found her lifelong partner, Roddy McKinney. They married on September 11, 1965, and together built a remarkable life spanning more than six decades. Their marriage was grounded in love, loyalty, shared dreams, and a deep commitment to one another. They were true partners in every sense of the word.
Together, Janice and Roddy founded Satellites Unlimited, Inc., beginning the business in the basement of their home. Through hard work and determination, they grew it into a successful company and lasting legacy. Janice was critical to its success, handling payroll and bookkeeping while becoming the person everyone could come to. Employees knew she genuinely cared about them and their families, and customers felt that same warmth and concern. Her ability to make people feel heard, valued, and cared for became an important part of the culture she and Roddy created.
Janice was a proud graduate of Myers Park High School.
Janice was a woman of deep faith and a proud member of Christ Church Birmingham. She believed in people, encouraged them, and looked for the good in every situation. The word "believe" held a special place in her heart; she had countless items bearing the word, a fitting reflection of the faith and optimism she shared with others.
Her greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Roddy; her sons, Lee (Candice) and Danny (Amy); her three treasured grandchildren, Everlee, Ella Slaton, and Bain; and her sisters, Patricia Smith (Zollie) and Ann Benton (Fred Page), along with countless cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Janice had a rare gift for making people feel loved. She cared deeply about the lives of others and made people feel that they mattered. Her family and friends will especially remember her familiar goodbye: "I love you more." It was more than a phrase-it captured the generosity of her heart and the love she so freely gave.
She was a devoted wife, loving mother, adoring grandmother, beloved sister, and steadfast friend. Her example-to love generously, believe in others, and always care for the people around you-will remain with all who knew her.
In memory of Janice, her family kindly suggests donations to a charity of your choice, in keeping with her generous spirit and lifelong desire to help others.
Janice will be deeply missed, but the love she gave so freely will live on through her family, her friends, and the many lives she touched.
"I love you more."
