Janett Tyner

Janett Hurley Tyner 85, passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2020.  She was the daughter of the late Rosa Mae Hughes.   She was born August 17, 1935 in Roanake, AL and grew up in Valley, AL. She graduated from Valley High School in 1953 and was a 1955 graduate of the University of Alabama Nursing School.   In 1955, she married the love of her life, the late Walter Gene Tyner, and they were married for 57 years until Mr. Tyner’s death in 2012. Having survived childhood polio, this event undoubtedly sparked Janett’s calling for a career in healthcare.  During her nursing career, she worked as a nursing instructor at Carraway Methodist Nursing School, in hospital administration at Bessemer Carraway Medical Center, and eventually retired from Carraway Methodist Medical Center. She was a member of North Shelby Baptist Church.

She is survived by three children, Alisa (Dick) Helms, Russ (Kathy) Tyner, and Jayna (Brian) Southerland; Nine grandchildren who she loved FIERCELY: Tyner (Caitlin) Helms, Tucker (Emma) Helms, Thomas Helms, Mary Allison (Nick) Ostrye, Michael (fiancé, Grace Bangert) Tyner, Jennifer Tyner, Anna Scott Welch, Mary Evelyn Welch, and Will Welch; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their deepest and most sincere appreciation to Keva Williams, Dorothy Brown, and Marie Parks for their selfless service and devoted friendship to Mrs. Tyner during the last few years of her life.

A private service will be held this Sunday, December 13th at 2:00 p.m. at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorials to the North Shelby Baptist Church, 4100 Belcher Drive, Birmingham, AL 35242.
