James Crawford
Patton
Sep 16, 1928 — Jun 27, 2026
James C. "Cotton" Patton, 97, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026. Born September 16, 1928, Cotton lived a long life defined by hard work, humility, faithfulness, and steadfast love. While his family and friends grieve his passing, they also celebrate a life well lived.
Cotton was blessed to share 74 years of marriage with his wife, Ann-a truly remarkable lifetime of love and devotion. He was a deeply honest, dependable man who put his family first and quietly lived out his faith every day.
A proud veteran, Cotton served his country in the United States Marine Corps, carrying the values of discipline and loyalty with him always. He later spent 40 years as a phonecompany technician, where he was known for his strong work ethic. Cotton firmly believed in giving a full day's work for a full day's pay, and that any job worth doing was worth doing to the best of your ability.
He found his greatest joy in simple pleasures-gardening, being outside, and visiting with family and friends. Cotton was always willing to lend a helping hand, giving generously of his time, often quietly without seeking recognition.
Those who knew him best understood that while he could be firm and direct, beneath that strength was a deeply tender heart. He was tough when he needed to be, attentive and caring in the ways that mattered most, and truly content with the life he was given. His love was both spoken and proven through steady actions and a faithful presence.
As a longtime member of First Baptist Hoover and later Lakeside Baptist Church, Cotton's faith was his foundation. He leaves behind a legacy of faith that continues to impact all who loved him. His family takes great comfort in knowing he is with the Lord Jesus Christ and reunited with those who went before him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. and Alice Acton Patton; his brothers, Clarence (Margaret), Raymond (Eva), Virgil (Willie), and John L. (Gladys) Patton; and his sisters, Lila (Marvell) Williams and Lola Katherine Patton.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; his children, James A. (Jimmy) Patton, Debbie Patton, Kathy Williams, and John (Tish) Patton; his grandchildren, Reid (Kristen) Patton, Nathan (Rebekah) Williams, and Taylor Patton; and his great-grandchildren, Ceile and Wren Patton.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Affinity Hospice-especially his nurse, Katie, and caregiver, Tiffany-for their wonderful care and kindness over the last two years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, your local church, a charity of your choice, or give your time helping someone, like he would.
