James Arthur McCutcheon, 83, passed away on March 19th, 2026 after an illness. He was a retired chemistry teacher at Hueytown High School, and a retired biology teacher at Jefferson State Community College. James was born in Birmingham and graduated from Jones Valley High School. He received his Bachelors of Science from Auburn University, his Masters Degree from the University of Alabama, and his Ed.S. degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Some of his personal interests included astronomy, collecting classical music, and writing poetry.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Madison and Annie Floy McCutcheon, two sisters, Floy McCutcheon and JoAnn Harp (Bill), and one brother, Joseph Melton McCutchen (Geniece). He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sue Chandler McCutcheon, two children, Jammye McCutcheon Holmes (Eric), and James Chandler McCutcheon (Ashley), and four grandchildren, Katelyn Holmes (age 16), Joshua Holmes (age 14), Logan McCutcheon (age 5), and Quinn McCutcheon (age 3).

The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 24th, 2026 at Curry-Jefferson Funeral Home Memorial Gardens, 2701 John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover, Alabama 35244. Family will receive friends beginning at 1 pm until 2 pm, with a funeral service beginning at 2 pm in the Chapel of Curry-Jefferson. Burial to follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
