James Brooks

James Paul Brooks of Hoover, AL passed away at the age of 88 in the early morning hours Saturday, July 23, 2022.

He was preceded in death by his parents JD Brooks and Lora Bell Brooks, brother Ralph Brooks and daughter Paula Cordes.  He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Barbara Brooks, son Steven Brooks, brother Jerald Brooks (Joyce), sister Glenda Jenkins, and grandchildren Amber Palmier (Gregg), Jaron Cordes (Jacqui), Sue Green (Shane), Brandy Woodall (Zach), and great-grandchildren Matthew Palmier (Cynthia), Jessica Palmier (Ben), Kayla Palmier(Colby), Dylan Palmier, Ivory Nealey, Landon Green, Brad Green, Oliver Woodall, John Brooks Woodall, soon to be born Isabella Woodall, and great-great-grandchildren Marilyn Palmier and Alice Palmier.

James was in the Army for a few years and earned an Engineering degree there. He drove a truck for most of his life and only retired at the age of 72 when a recession hit and he figured he ‘may as well retire now.’ He worked most of his years for himself with Barbara keeping the books for him and they made a great team. He spent a good deal of time teaching others. He taught his wife to drive, his kids how to get things done, his grandkids to ride bicycles down the road to his house and to play basketball, and his pets to do tricks to show all the grandkids. He loved dogs, cats and even brought home the occasional duck. He blew the horn on his truck as he drove by the grandkids houses and was always known to stop by and buy hand painted rocks and whatever they had created. He was a big AL fan and an even bigger classic car fan, mostly from back in his younger days. He loved engineering creative ways to make things work, growing fruits and vegetables, took care of his own land, rarely calling anyone else in to do things. He was appreciative of all the socks he got over the years at Christmas, as long as he also got chocolate covered cherries to go with it. He was the best husband, dad, and Papa and will greatly missed.

Viewing to be held Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at 9:30 am and funeral service at 10:00 am in the chapel at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover, AL.
