Jack Emory Gray

May 19, 1938 — October 7, 2025

Birmingham, Alabama

Jack Emory Gray, 87, of Birmingham, was welcomed into the arms of God on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. He was preceded in death by his cherished parents, Hershel and Bertha Gray.

He leaves behind his devoted wife of 70 years, Virginia Gray, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership since their wedding on September 1, 1955. Jack is also survived by his son, Jeff Gray (Jeannie); his grandchildren, Ashley Barnes, Daniel Gray (Chantel), and Tyler Bowman; his great-grandchildren, Gracie Mixon (Zack), Baylee Gray, Charlie Gray; his great-great-grandchildren, Jaxon Mixon; expected in December is Baby Boy Gray and Josiah Mixon.

Jack attended VBS as a child at First Church of the Nazarene on Graymont Avenue. In 1967, he returned to that same church with his wife and son, becoming actively involved in ministry, especially in teaching children and youth. In 1972, after building their family home, Jack and his family planted new roots and transferred their membership to West Haven Church of the Nazarene. Seven years later, in 1979, they joined Pleasant Grove Church of the Nazarene, where they faithfully worshipped and served the Lord for many years. In 2019, seeking a church closer to home, they moved their membership to Birmingham First Church of the Nazarene, continuing their devotion in a community that was easier to reach.

Throughout his life, Jack was both shaped by mentors and became a mentor to many. His work ethic proved strong, from the age of 14 he began working at Hill’s Grocery, which later became Winn Dixie. He worked for Winn Dixie until opening the first Food Giant Grocery store in Bessemer, AL with good friend Jim Payne in 1973. He retired from Food Giant in 2001 and started Gray’s Steam Cleaning where he worked till, he was 78 years old. His desire was to spend more time with his grandkids and family. He was always a hard worker and great provider.

Jack cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially when teaching them to fish and hunt—passing down not just skills, but stories, patience, and love. His calendar revolved around their lives; if a grandchild had a game, Jack was there, supporting from the sidelines with pride. He was a tireless supporter of his family, always present, always encouraging. Thinking of others came naturally to him, it was woven into the very fabric of who he was.

The family will receive friends from 12pm-1:30pm, Friday, October 17, 2025, at Currie-Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, Hwy 150 in Hoover, AL. Memorial and committal service immediately to follow.
