Ida Mae Mahan Champion, 91, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend passed from this life to her heavenly home on March 27, 2023.

She was born on November 30, 1931 in Bessemer, AL, to Arthur Alvis Mahan and Rosa Belle Morrow Mahan.

Ida married Malcolm Champion on January 17, 1953 in Columbus M.S. They were married for 68 years and had three children, Jacqueline Miles, of Pittsboro, NC, Susan Culberson, of Sterrett, AL, and Malcolm David Champion of Oak Grove, AL.

Ida was a faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church for many years and loved the Lord. She was a creative person and loved cats, sewing, working in her gardens, baking and reading. She was a talented painter and shared her paintings with her family and friends. She enjoyed vacationing with her family. She could often be found roaming in antique and thrift stores looking for a piece of furniture to refinish. When she was 70 years old, she started hiking and made several trips on the Appalachian Trail, sleeping in a hammock and camping in the outdoors.

Ida is preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm, her sisters, Ada Mahan, Iona Champion, and Audrey Krotzer, and her brothers, Alvis (Bud) Mahan, Jr., Ralph Mahan, Cliff Mahan and Lloyd Mahan. She is survived by her daughter, Jacqueline Miles (Ray Bouldin) of Pittsboro NC, daughter, Susan Culberson (Cliff) of Sterrett, AL, son, Malcolm David Champion (Carol) of Adger, AL, grandson, Kevin Miles (Woodson) of Atlanta, GA, granddaughter, Kari MacLean (Andrew) of Pittsboro NC, granddaughter, Megan Ingram (Brian) of Weaver, AL, granddaughter, Kaitlin Brownson (Cody) of Alabaster, AL, granddaughter, Kelsea Gulsby of Sterrett, AL, great-grandson, Miles MacLean of Chapel Hill NC, great-granddaughter, Eloise MacLean of Chapel Hill NC, great-grandson, Fisher MacLean of Pittsboro, NC, great-grandson, Malcolm MacLean of Pittsboro, NC, and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service at 2:30 for the family and friends of Ida Champion at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, Currie Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover.

Memorial donations may be made in Ida's honor to her home church: Oak Grove Baptist Church, 9161 Camp Oliver Rd, Bessemer, AL 35023.
