George Benjamin Garrett, III, age 85, passed away at his home on May 25, 2026. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on May 20, 1941, George lived a life defined by faith, devotion to family, humility, and kindness.
George attended Louisiana Tech University, where he played baseball and formed lifelong friendships. It was also there that he met the love of his life, Barbara. Long before college as a young schoolgirl, Barbara told her friends that one day she would marry George Garrett - and she did. Their love story became a family legend when one of George's teammates bet him a quarter that Barbara would never go out with him. She proved them all wrong, and that first date led to a loving marriage that lasted over 62 wonderful years. Barbara, a former Miss Louisiana Tech, and George built a beautiful life together, grounded in faith, love, laughter, and unwavering commitment to one another and their family. George's commitment to Barbara was unwavering and should be an example for all of us in the love and care of a spouse.
George spent his career with BellSouth and later AT&T, where he was respected for his integrity, steady character, and strong work ethic.
Above all else, George was a devoted Christian whose faith guided every part of his life. For more than 40 years, George and Barbara were faithful members of Green Valley Baptist Church, where they formed deep and lasting friendships that became like family. Many wonderful memories were made with these families, including annual beach trips, softball tournaments, camping trips, and countless hunting trips, with many stories of George's dry wit. Those relationships and the spiritual foundation built there carried throughout their lives and became transformational across generations of their family. In recent years, they were members of Lakeside Baptist Church.
George lived his faith, serving in many leadership capacities, teaching Sunday School, and as a deacon; he also participated in multiple mission trips abroad to Brazil, Romania, and Ukraine. His gentle spirit, wisdom, and steadfast presence were a blessing to all who knew him.
George leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Barbara Garrett; a son, Donald Garrett (Kristie), a daughter, Cheryl Holmberg (Hank); grandchildren Haley, Sam, and Ben Garrett, Garrett Schlichte, Katrina Langland (Phillip); great-grandchildren Norah and Lily Langland; and many extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Benjamin Garrett, Jr., and Jane Biles Garrett, and his brother Frank H. Garrett (JoAnne).
Family will greet visitors at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover on June 1 at 10 a.m., with a service to follow at 11 a.m.
The family finds comfort in knowing George's strong faith carried him home to the Lord he faithfully served throughout his life. Thanks be to God for the beautiful life of his faithful servant. God's grace surrounds us.
