Evelyne "Penny" Cardenas at the age of 77, went home to the Lord peacefully with her loved ones by her side on July 9, 2023, after a long illness with Interstitial Lung Disease, Pulmonary Fibrosis and Autoimmune Hepatitis. She was born on October 23, 1945, in Manila, Philippines to Jesus Jacinto and Maura Nill Jacinto.
Known for her ability to always make everyone around her laugh over the silliest things, Penny was an inspiration to all who knew her and will be dearly missed. She was a deeply spiritual woman who shared God's love with others. The impact of Penny's life will be felt for years to come. Penny's family asks that she be remembered for the joy and laughter she brought to others in life, not the sadness of her passing.
A Neuropsychologist working with autistic kids and those with brain injuries before her retirement, her patients often remembered her fondly even years after treatment ended. Penny was very involved with the Lake Crest Presbyterian Church, and other local volunteer events, and was sad to have to curtail much of it due to physical limitations as her illnesses progressed.
She is survived by her daughter, Alexandra, son-in-law Marvin and grandchildren Veronica (Roni) and Logan as well as her siblings Sonny (+Ces), Susan and Margie. She has many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives that she was very close to, even if they lived almost 10,000 miles and a continent away. She is predeceased by her husband Manuel (Ling) and her parents.
Although her remains will be flown back to the Philippines for interment at the family mausoleum, there will be a local service to allow her friends to say goodbye.
Visitation will be from 2:00pm to 3:00pm on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at the Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home on 2701 John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover, AL 35244. A short service led by Pastor Thomas Joseph will follow at 3:00pm.
