Dr. Edward C. Whittington of Hoover, AL passed away peacefully at home on August 31, 2024 surrounded by his beloved wife, Judy, and his family. Dr. Whittington, known to most as Ed, was born in Greenville, AL on September 29, 1946. He is preceded in death by his parents, John K. and Sara K. Whittington, and his older brother, John Phillip Whittington.
Dr. Whittington graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, AL and attended college at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He then pursued his medical career, graduating in 1974 from The University of Alabama Medical School in Birmingham, AL. After a two-year internship, he joined a family practice group in Jasper, AL. Following a brief stent there, he returned to Birmingham, AL where he completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Carraway Methodist Medical Center. In 1980, he returned to Jasper, AL where he began practice as a board-certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist associated with Walker Regional Medical Center. In 1991, after 11 wonderful years in Jasper, AL, he accepted a teaching position in the residency program at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Women and Children in Orlando, FL. While he enjoyed his time there, he missed private practice and joined Altawood Gynecological Associates in Orlando, where he practiced until retirement. In 2000, he and his family returned home to Birmingham, AL.
Dr. Whittington loved watching Alabama football and spending time grilling out with family and friends. He loved the Lord and was a friend to many.
Funeral services will be held at Hunter Street Baptist Church on Hwy 150 in Hoover, AL on Thursday, September 5th at 1 pm with visitation from 12 pm to 1 pm and an intimate graveside service at Pine View Memorial Gardens in Wetumpka on Friday, September 6th at 10:00 am. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Camp Whittington; two sons, Edward C. Whittington, Jr. and Patrick T. Whittington; two daughters, Angela Whittington Segars (Neil) and Lindsay Whittington Daniel (Josh Bethea); 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; one sister, Kathryn Ramirez (Fred), and one brother, Robert Whittington, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Greg Odom, Neil Segars, Joel Whittington, Will Woodall, Andrew Humber, Jason Latham, John Camp, and Chuck Pierce.
