Virginia Hughes Moore

January 14, 1934 — May 2, 2025

Virginia Hughes Moore of Birmingham, AL passed away peacefully on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the age of 91. She is survived by sons Thomas Edward Moore, III (Melanie) and their daughters Rebecca Norman (Blake) and Haley Moore, as well as Christopher Hughes Moore (Barbi) and their son Danny Moore (Shannon) and daughter Christa Moore.

One of three children of the late Colonel Albert E. and Rosemary Hughes, Virginia was born in Tuscaloosa, AL on January 14, 1934. Her brother Albert Hughes and sister Marianne English, as well as her husband Thomas E. Moore, Jr. preceded her in death. Raised in Tuscaloosa and a graduate of Tuscaloosa High School, Virginia was a member of the Million Dollar Band during her time on campus.

Virginia and Tom were married in 1952 and celebrated nearly sixty years of marriage prior to his passing in 2012. Her husband was a second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and their early married years were spent living in a variety of locations around the country while he was on duty, including Washington and Texas. They settled in Montgomery, AL after his discharge until 1966, when they relocated to Vestavia Hills, AL, where she would spend the majority of her adult life. She was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Vestavia Hills and was a preschool teacher at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church for several years. Virginia enjoyed time with her friends and family and was a talented singer, as evidenced by the fact that she and her sister Marianne hosted a radio musical program in Tuscaloosa during their teenage years.

Virginia was a patient, loving and faithful wife, as well as a strong mother and grandmother. She loved music and a good laugh and was treasured by her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of encouragement, strength, family, and love.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 7, 2025 from 11:00 to 12:00 with a graveside service for family and close friends being held at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., with Reverend Dr. Tom Bryson presiding. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations to the Alabama Alzheimer’s Association or Southminster Presbyterian Church in Vestavia Hills, AL be considered in Virginia’s honor.
