Born the eldest son and child of Elmer Mitchell Honeywell and his wife, Evalene Gilbert, Don was a native of Baltimore City, MD, as was his father, his paternal grandfather, Francis Levi Honeywell, and his paternal great-grandfather, John Honeywell. He was raised in a stable Methodist household with his three siblings, all of whom were educated in Baltimore City public schools and predeceased Don. He resided in Cub Hill, Baltimore County, MD, May 1972 until September 2012 when he relocated to Birmingham, Shelby County, Al.
After graduating from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1949, Don was employed in June 1950 as a road inspector with the State Roads Commission (now Maryland State Highway Administration). He advanced to associate engineer and retired in July 1990. Don held various positions including instrument man on a survey party, batch plant inspector until assuming primary responsibility for supervision of design of several state and interstate highways, including 1-95 between the Baltimore and Capital Beltways. During his employment, he completed numerous work-related courses in engineering and management and earned a number of credits at Baltimore County Community College. He also took courses in Welding and Machine Shop at Eastern Vo Tech High School. He was an avid hobby machinist until relocating to Birmingham.
Don submitted his life to the Lord Jesus Christ in about 1964. In his desire to grow deeper in his faith, Don attended Baltimore School of the Bible and graduated in 1971. He was ordained as a Ruling Elder and actively served for 50 years when he became Elder Emeritus at age 90 years. He served for many years on various committies of Potomac Presbytery, PCA, and was chairman of the Committee on Session Records from 2002 to 2009. He also served as a Telephone Counselor with Billy Graham Ministries. In 2008 he became associated with the Baltimore North Camp of the Gideons International, transferring to Shelby West Camp in 2013.
Don married Miss Norma Lea Jones on Thanksgiving Day 1950 in Federalsburg, Caroline County, MD. After bearing him three children, Norma Lea was call home by her Lord on 23 March 1975. Don remarried to Grace Elsie Davison on 8 June 1975 at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church where he served as Ruling Elder. In 1978 they became Members of Valley PCS, Lutherville, Baltimore County, MD where he undertook several responsibilities including Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. In 2011 they became members of Redeemer PCA, Kingsville, Baltimore County, MD, until 2013 when they joined Grace Presbyterian Church, Hoover, AL. In 1986 Don and Grace became foster parents to twenty-eight children.
Don was a man of many interests. In the 1960s he was involved in the patriotic movement, a concern that continued his entire life. He became a member of the SAR. Since the mid 1980s, he was an active member of the Baltimore County (MD) Genealogical Society and other such societies. For decades he served as line coordinator of the Melchior Yoder branch of the greater Yoder family on behalf of the Yoder Newsletter. He was a man of many hobbies over the years including sports car racing, shooting and coin collecting.
Don is survived by five children: Mrs. Claude D. DePrine (Donna Lea) of Birmingham; Francis Levi Honeywell, 111, of Catonsville, Baltimore County, MD; Daniel Mitchell Honeywell, of Birmingham, AL; Roy Edward "Ted" Honeywell, of Perry Hall, Baltimore County, MD; and Jessica Elizabeth Polan of Parkville, Baltimore County, MD; also survived by 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two stepchildren: Kendall Jay Jefferson of Lindon, Utah County, UT; and Rebecca Ann Chamberlain of Hagerstown, Washington County, Utah.
