Charlie Purter, 89, an eternal optimist and man of incredible accomplishments, passed away peacefully at his home on June 14, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on May 28, 1936, in Eclectic, Alabama, Charlie was a true "nature boy," finding joy and solace in the tranquil streams, the ever-shifting tapestries of clouds, and the steadfast embrace of trees. He graduated from Tallahassee Public High School on May 24, 1954, embarking on a life marked by remarkable service and global adventure.

In 1955, Charlie joined the military, a path that led him to Paris, France. There, while working for the SHAPE division of NATO, he met the love of his life, Nicole. Their early years together saw them living in San Francisco in the 1960s, returning to Paris after the birth of their daughter, Armelle. Charlie's military career continued with assignments at Fort Ord in Monterey, California during the late 60s, followed by a posting in Frankfurt with the Armed Forces Network Europe. He ultimately retired from the military in 1978 while stationed at Fort Belvoir in Washington D.C.

Following his distinguished military career, Charlie continued to serve his country as a civilian for the federal government. He held significant roles, including working in the Executive Office of the White House during the Carter Administration, at the Pentagon, and for the Department of Defense schools. Education was also important to Charlie, who pursued higher learning at the University of Maryland for his undergraduate studies and Central Michigan University for his graduate degree.

In retirement, Charlie embraced life with the same enthusiasm he showed throughout his career. He deeply cherished time with his wife, enjoyed rounds of golf, reveled in the outdoors, and embarked on memorable travels with his family. He was known for his welcoming nature, love for good food, and meeting new faces wherever he went.

Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Nicole; his children, Michael, Charles, and Armelle; his siblings, Wilson, Joseph Jr., Melinda, and Johnie Lee; and beautiful grandchildren. His unwavering optimism and legacy of accomplishment will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation. https://www.parkinson.org/
