Charles Philip Willis, 62 of Hoover, Alabama, passed away with his wife by his side on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy of a loving husband, devoted father, lifelong friend, and cherished memories that will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Charles was born on Saturday, April 4, 1964, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He spent his early childhood in Midland, Texas and his teenage years in Mobile, Alabama.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 12 years, Cynthia Powell Willis; his sons, Joshua Willis and Adam Willis, and his brother, Richard Willis. He was preceded in death by his mother, Roma Willis, and father, Henry Willis.
Charles graduated from Colorado School of Mines in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering. Over the course of a distinguished 40-year career in the oil and gas industry, he worked both domestically and internationally. He spent the last 21 years with Warrior Met Coal, serving as President and General Manager of Warrior Met Coal Gas. Throughout his career, Charles earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues through his leadership, dedication, and willingness to help others. He served on the Alabama Board for Engineers & Land Surveyors and as Chairman of the Coalbed Methane Association of Alabama. His many professional honors included the 2024 Alabama Mining Association President's Community Safety Award and the 2022 Coalbed Methane Industry in Alabama Blue Flame Award.
Outside of work, Charles loved the beach, deep-sea fishing, Alabama football, and the music of Jimmy Buffett. With his love of the salt air and the open ocean, he was truly a pirate at heart. Charles approached life with discipline, determination, and a strong sense of responsibility. Intelligent and level-headed, he believed in doing things well, making a meaningful contribution, and always moving forward. Outgoing and straightforward, he spoke his mind and had a dry sense of humor. He valued his friendships deeply, making a point of bringing people together, helping others when needed, and staying connected across the years and miles. Some of those friendships spanned more than 40 years, a testament to his loyalty and the importance he placed on the people in his life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Eagle Wings of Tuscaloosa, a charity that was especially close to Charles's heart and that he generously supported. Donations can be made online here.
