Carrie Sue Dunaway Hinds

December 4, 1932 — February 14, 2026

Carrie Sue Hinds, of Pelham, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at the age of 93. She died peacefully in the home her husband built in 1953—the same home where they raised their four children on the family’s dairy farm.

A graduate of Shades Valley High School, Mrs. Hinds was a faithful, lifelong member of Pelham First United Methodist Church (Lakeview). She was known as a kind, generous, and sweet-spirited woman whose joy for life blessed everyone who knew her. A woman of God and a true "giver" of love, Carrie Sue’s influence spanned generations. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, cousin, mother-in-law, niece, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. As a sister in Christ, she was deeply involved in her church family at Pelham UMC-Lakeview. She was that rare soul who lived to do good for others, seeing past their faults without judgment.

She lived a life of service both at home and in her community. Throughout her lifetime, she was a dedicated volunteer for many organizations across Pelham, Shelby County, and Birmingham, including the Civitan Club, United Methodist Women, Pelham Homemakers, and Shelby County Alabama Homemakers & Community. She also gave her time to the Pelham Library, the Pelham Senior Center, local voting polls, and area hospitals. A fixture in local schools (Pelham, Thompson, Valley Elementary, Riverchase Middle, and Pelham High School), she served as a room mother and on various PTA boards. She was always on the go—giving, sharing, and leaning on the Lord for strength without a single complaint.

Carrie Sue loved to cook, craft, play games, read, sew, quilt, work puzzles, and travel. Her kind spirit and "giving lifestyle" will be remembered by the young and old alike. She lived by the promise from God: "I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you." (Joshua 1:5)

She is survived by her daughters, Martha Ann Hinds Ward (Kenneth Ward) and Kimberly Clara Hinds Balzli Warren (Matthew Warren); her grandchildren, Brian Ward (Anna), Ken Lebowitz, Farrah Hinds McMeekin, Justin Hinds (Stacy), Brent Hinds (Natalie), Megan Kirchner (Andrew), Camryn Hinds, Austin Balzli (Katie), and Will Balzli; and many beloved great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bobby Lee Hinds; her sons, Robert Lee Hinds and Charles Hinds; and her grandchildren, Monty Hinds and Amy Renee Ward Lebowitz.
