In Loving Memory
Celebrating a Life of Service and Love
With deep affection and gratitude, we remember a devoted mother, cherished friend, and dedicated community member whose journey touched many across continents and cities. Born May 10,1935 in Demerara, Guyana, she lived a life marked by compassion, resilience, and unwavering faith.
As one of seven children (Leo, Prince, George, Sheila, Clinton and Willie) born to Sydney and Elvira Melville, Ada grew up largely with her grandmother, Alberta Richardson. To keep up with her many brothers, Ada learned early that with perseverance she could overcome any challenge. This is a lesson that would serve her well throughout her life.
As an adult Ada would marry Neville Abrahams and their union was blessed with three sons: Leroy, Richard and Nigel. They would, however, feel the loss of their second child as Richard did not live to grow up with his siblings. Seeking better opportunities, the family emigrated to the United States, first landing in New York City.
Ada’s professional path was as diverse as it was inspiring. She began her career as a textile factory worker in New York City, before serving as a nursing assistant and school bus driver in Houston, TX. She was also a childcare provider in both Denver, CO, and Nashville, TN. In Nashville, her entrepreneurial spirit led her to open and run a home-based childcare center where dozens of children enjoyed their first educational experiences under her loving care. Through each role, she uplifted those around her with kindness and commitment.
Throughout Ada’s adult life, she inspired others and remained active in her church and community. She was a beloved member of several congregations, including: Hebron SDA in Houston, TX; Park Hill in Denver, CO; Riverside in Nashville, TN; Fayette SDA in Fayetteville, GA; and Valley SDA in Birmingham, AL. Wherever she saw a need she would apply her talents, skills and resources to fill it. Her service as a deaconess, involvement in youth ministries, and dedication to community service reflected her generous spirit and steadfast faith.
Ada enjoyed traveling, exploring new places, and embracing each new adventure with enthusiasm. Her life itself was a journey, taking her from Guyana, SA to New York City, Houston, Denver, Nashville, Atlanta, and Birmingham. She built lasting relationships and left indelible memories along the way.
Ada also found joy in cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, and taking morning walks. These hobbies brought her peace and allowed her to share love and warmth with family and friends.
Ada is survived by her sons: Leroy (Malisa) and Nigel (Monica); grandchildren Leroy II (KeAndrea), Jonathan (Purity) and Monique; great-grandchildren Abigail, Jonathan and Kalia; several other relatives and many dear friends she made along her journey. “Miss Ada”, as she was known professionally, will be also missed by the many children (and their parents) she cared for over the years.
While Ada drew her final breath on September 8, 2025, her memory remains alive in those she leaves behind. We honor her legacy of compassion, faith, and service. Her love, wisdom, and strength will be deeply missed but forever cherished by all who had the privilege to know her.
