Lottie Marie (Massengill) Smith

January 7, 1929 ~ July 13, 2019 (age 90)

Lottie Marie Smith, with steadfast faith, passed peacefully from this life on July 13, 2019, surrounded by her loving family in Hoover, Alabama.

Born on January 7, 1929, at her grandmother’s home in Rienzi, Mississippi, Lottie was the only child of Alma Gertrude and Leander David Massengill.  After losing her mother at 8 years of age she was lovingly raised by her father and a very special aunt, Verder Massengill and uncle, Ed Massengill. A graduate of Rienzi High School, Class of 1946, Lottie was Valedictorian and a member of the girls basketball team. After high school, she was employed as a telephone operator in Corinth, Ms. before working as a teller at The Security Bank leaving there to start a family in 1954.  Later, she worked for many years at Pittman Brothers Propane Gas Co. as a bookkeeper in addition to managing her household.  After retiring she stayed active with the Belle Bennett Circle at First United Methodist Church Corinth. Lottie also was a long-time volunteer at the Magnolia Regional Hospital Auxiliary where she worked in the gift shop and supported numerous activities including her favorite, a nursing scholarship program.

Lottie was truly a selfless person and a blessing to everyone she knew or met. A great cook and an excellent seamstress, she was generous with her time and many talents. Whether styling hair for patients at the local nursing home or helping co-workers with their tax returns, Lottie was always willing to help out where there was a need.  She especially loved vegetable gardening, growing flowers and settling in front of the TV for a college basketball game.

Lottie was deeply committed to her church, First United Methodist Church of Corinth, where she had been a member since 1949.  She relocated from Corinth, MS in February 2014 to Birmingham, Alabama to be closer to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After her move, she was adopted by The Church at Ross Bridge in Hoover, Alabama.

Lottie was preceded in death by her mother and father, Leander and Alma Massengill and is survived by her sons Gary (Debbi) of Andalusia, Alabama and Bob (Sandy) of Millbrook, Al; granddaughters Ashley Bruner (Scott), Kalli Delaney (Andrew) and Carrie Sivaraman (Boopathy) all of Birmingham; great grandchildren Gates Bruner, Collins Bruner, Smith Bruner, Mary Charles Delaney, Betsy Delaney, Cate Delaney and Madhuri Marie Sivaraman.

Services will be held Thursday, July 18 at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, 2701 John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover, Alabama. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm and Memorial Service at 2:00 pm. A second service on Friday, July 19 at First United Methodist Church Chapel in Corinth, Mississippi. Visitation beginning at 1:00 pm and the Memorial Service at 2:00 pm.
